LETTER TO MEMBERS & SUPPORTERS
Dear Friends,
George B. Dorr, the first superintendent and a principle founder of Acadia National
Park, wrote, "It is an opportunity of singular interest, so to develop and preserve the
wild charm and beauty of this unique spot on our Atlantic coast that future generations
may rejoice in it yet more than we. I trust it will be recognized that what we have now
achieved is a beginning only and that our needs are many."
Now, more than 20 years after the establishment of Friends of Acadia and nearly
100 years after the creation of Acadia National Park, Mr. Dorršs words ring as true and
clear as ever. In 2007, we honored the vision of Acadiašs founders and reflected on
our accomplishments of helping to preserve and protect Acadia for future generations.
Thanks to the support of our donors, volunteers, and partners, Friends continues to
protect the precious resources of Acadia and its surrounding communities. We have
renewed our commitment to bring more young people into the park so that those
resources are enjoyed and stewarded by future generations.
In 2016, Acadia and the National Park Service will celebrate their centennial anniver-saries.
Friends of Acadia is working with partners nationwide and locally to lay a solid
foundation of support over the next eight years. Our goal is to help prepare Acadia for
a second century of inspirational wild charm and beauty.
Friends is participating in the Centennial Initiative, an historic effort to increase
funding to Americašs national parks. The initiative is designed to commit additional
funding and promote public-private matches to generate up to $3 billion for our parks
over the next decade. Friends of Acadia is working to meet the challenge to fund
centennial projects in Acadia.
As Mr. Dorr reminds us, the greatness that you, our members, have helped Friends
achieve is only a beginningAcadiašs needs continue. We thank you for making
possible the many accomplishments included in this annual report. As always, we
encourage you to take great pride in knowing that you are an important partner in
preserving this very magnificent place, now and in the future.
In gratitude,
Lili Pew, Chairman of the Board
Marla S. O'Byrne, President
