LETTER TO MEMBERS & SUPPORTERS
Dear Friends,
This annual report reflects the commitment of thousands of members and volunteers.
Despite the economic maelstrom leading into the end of 2008, Friends of Acadia ended
the year with strong membership support and fresh resolve.
Throughout these pages are highlights of Friends’ accomplishments over the year,
including:
- Surpassed $13 million in cumulative grants to Acadia National Park
and communities since 1995
- Kicked off Acadia Quest, a new partnership effort with the park
to engage kids in nature
- Through Acadia Trails Forever, began the reconstruction of the
Schooner Head Path, restoring a century-old trail connection
for walkers from Bar Harbor into the park
- Recruited and led more than 2,500 volunteers who contributed
12,000 hours to on-the-ground stewardship
- Put more than 20 young adults to work in Acadia
- Groomed Acadia’s carriage roads for cross-country skiing
- Hosted our first “Green Gala,” choosing cleaner technology
and a simpler, more sustainable approach
We completed our third strategic plan in 2008. The key goals and priorities
will guide our efforts through 2016, when Acadia National Park and the National
Park Service celebrate their centennial anniversaries. You are invited to join in the
preparation and celebration!
As you review this report, recall with pride the significant role you played in
ensuring that Acadia National Park endures as a refuge of tranquility, beauty, and
profound inspiration for future generations.
We hope to see you out in the park with family and friends this year!
In gratitude,
Lili Pew, Chairman of the Board
Marla S. O'Byrne, President
