Friends of Acadia helps preserve 3200 Acres abutting Acadia on the Schoodic Peninsula
The fate of an undeveloped, 3,200-acre property abutting Acadia on the Schoodic Peninsula has hung in the balance ever since a huge “eco-resort” was proposed by property owners three years ago.
Friends of Acadia has been actively seeking a better future for this unbroken woodland/wetland ever since. On December 20, the land was purchased by the Lyme Timber Company LP, a private timberland investment and management organization with a great track record of sustainably managing lands with unique conservation values.
Friends of Acadia has a long history of working to protect this property, starting with a successful campaign in 1997 to avert a clear-cut there. Now, FOA and Maine Coast Heritage Trust are partners in an option agreement with Lyme, giving an opportunity for a future conservation easement on the southern portion of the property where it borders Acadia. In addition, Lyme plans to work with FOA, MCHT, and other stakeholders to create an appropriate development plan.
This is a great accomplishment for the protection and preservation of Acadia National Park reflecting the effective partnership of Friends of Acadia, Acadia National Park, Marine Coast Heritage Trust with Lyme Timeber and others. Congratulations to all!
